The X-CHANGE programme was developed to help its members to further understand and tolerate differences between cultures and people. It is not simply a source of free accommodation, but the basis of a richly rewarding cultural exchange. The main idea behind the programme is to help students develop relationships all over the world and to promote a climate of global unity as we embark on a new millenium. Its success depends on the visitor's ability to adjust to the host's culture, lifestyle, and habits, and on the host's ability to help the visitor through the potentially difficult process of adjusting to a new situation.

A well-prepared visit is a successful visit

Communicate your expectations of the visit in as much detail as possible prior to confirming it. Anticipated length of stay, amount and nature of host-visitor contact, habits (e.g. night person/late sleeper, smoker/non-smoker, etc.), logistics (layout and location of flat/house, limitations of access)-- all of these things should be made absolutely clear BEFORE the partnership is confirmed, and it is both members' responsibility to do so.

The partnership is voluntary

Either the visitor or the host has the right to terminate a visit at any time, for example if conditions or an individual's behaviour is unacceptable to one party. As in any partnership, certain points of tension are bound to develop, and members are encouraged to deal with them as constructively as possible. In the event that either party terminates a visit, X-CHANGE is under no obligation to find the visitor another partner, but members can initiate new partnerships by accessing the X-CHANGE database.
